Tax preparer indicted in alleged fraud case

On Behalf of | Apr 8, 2021 | Tax fraud

Helping individuals and businesses with their tax returns is a complex job. Clients may expect more from a Texas tax preparer than he or she can do in terms of helping taxpayers get a favorable outcome, and clients could pressure tax professionals to bend the rules. Unfortunately, if someone involved in tax return preparation comes under investigation for bending the rules, serious criminal charges are possible.

    37 counts

It was recently reported that one tax preparer in another state is currently facing federal criminal charges in relation to alleged fraudulent endeavors. Apparently, the individual was indicted on 37 counts of illegal tax-related activity. The actions reportedly include aiding and assisting in the preparation of false and fraudulent tax returns, which made up 35 counts, and two counts of not filing personal tax returns in 2014 and 2016.

    Additional information

The tax preparer was reported as being 33 years old and owned tax preparation offices in two cities. The alleged fraudulent returns were reportedly filed between 2014 and 2017, but details were not provided as to why the preparer came under suspicion from the IRS or what specific fraudulent actions may have been involved. It was noted that consequences for the charges brought against this individual include hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and possible jail time if convicted.

    Preparing a defense

Fortunately, this tax preparer and anyone in Texas facing similar charges do not have to try to handle this ordeal alone. They have the right to defend against allegations in court and to have legal representation to assist them throughout the proceedings if they wish. Parties facing this type of predicament may want to gain information on their legal options to help them determine how to move forward.
