Offshore Accounts in Government Crosshairs

February 24, 2017

As the U.S. government looks for increased revenue, one of the most attractive places to look is where taxes that should be paid have not been paid. Since the 2009 voluntary disclosure initiative, which was very successful, and since recent legislative and policy changes of foreign governments such as Switzerland, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has become better and better at detecting hidden assets overseas and holding renegade would-be taxpayers accountable.

The IRS Commissioner, Doug Shulman, said, “As we continue to amass more information and pursue more people internationally, the risk to individuals hiding assets offshore is increasing.” He also said, “The goal is to get people back into the U.S. tax system. Combating international tax evasion is a top priority for the IRS. We have additional cases and banks under review. The situation will just get worse in the months ahead for those hiding assets and income offshore. This new disclosure initiative is the last, best chance for people to get back into the system.” (Source: www.irs.gov, “Second Special Voluntary Disclosure Initiative Opens; Those Hiding Assets Offshore Face Aug. 31 Deadline,” dated February 8, 2011.)

Under this intense scrutiny, tax secrecy continues to erode as the IRS has hired 800 new agents whose efforts will be intensely focused on hidden assets offshore.
